The Empress: The Nurturing Force of Life

When talking about the general meaning of The Empress, it represents motherhood, nurturing, empathy, abundance, art, beauty, the birth of new things, and warm, stable relationships. It is the ultimate fulfillment of life, both physically and spiritually.

I sometimes sit back and playfully reflect on why I am the way I am. Looking at it from various angles, I see many factors that have shaped my personality. I grew up in a middle-class family with a wonderful upbringing. I've heard the saying that we are the average of the seven people we spend the most time with. That seems to be true.

For me, it is most obvious with my mother and my older sister. We are constantly checking in and updating each other on our lives, while still respecting each other's privacy. Because of this, whenever I face challenges, my family is truly the home of my heart. We do share one particular trait: we are quite curious about other people's business, haha! But honestly, that is also part of what makes us good listeners and highly empathetic. It does come with a slight downside, though everyone operates like a loudspeaker. When a story begins with "Don't tell anyone," that is the exact starting point for broadcasting it loudly. In the end, everyone finds out anyway. So, if you're thinking about telling me a secret, think twice! I can guarantee that if the story is interesting enough, I will pass it on. I really can't keep it to myself!

Beyond my family, the environment around me has profoundly shaped who I am. Have you ever visited Thailand? Thailand is known as the "Land of Smiles," and many tourists say Thai people are incredibly kind. I have to agree with this. Why is that? Let's find the answer.

Since I was born, I've seen Thai people relying on and supporting one another, especially among the older generation or people in the provinces. For example, if adjacent food stalls run out of pork or vegetables, they can easily borrow ingredients from the shop next door to keep their business going. This is because we know we live in an abundant land, with more than enough to share with others. Or, when someone passes away, funerals are often held at home, and all the neighbors come to help organize the event. They know that moral support is what is needed most during those difficult times.

Even during major natural disasters in Thailand, when the economy is bad and people are struggling, Thais still pool their donations no matter how small or organize volunteer groups to go down and help. It's because we have deep empathy for one another. Even if we can't fully understand the depth of the victims' suffering, we want to offer whatever encouragement we can.

I live in Bangkok, and despite leading an urban life, I still see this spirit of helping everywhere. It might come in the form of donations or joining volunteer camps to develop remote communities. There is one specific project that I feel perfectly embodies the spirit of The Empress: the mangrove planting project. This is the creation of living "natural architecture" that immensely helps restore the ecosystem.

Mangrove forests are special because they are the transitional zones between land and water. Mangrove conservation and planting projects create positive impacts across three main dimensions:

  • An Excellent Wind and Wave Barrier: The intricately woven prop roots act as a shock-absorbing structure against storms and waves, effectively preventing coastal erosion.

  • A Marine Nursery: The tangled underwater root structures serve as a "Safe Zone" for juvenile shrimp, shellfish, crabs, and fish to take shelter and forage before growing up and swimming out into the open ocean.

  • A Carbon Treasure (Blue Carbon): Mangrove ecosystems can store 4 to 5 times more carbon dioxide than typical terrestrial forests.

Cultivating a new mangrove forest to survive and thrive is a highly delicate process. When a new mangrove forest takes root and grows, it gradually draws biodiversity back to the area. It is a form of conservation that starts with a single tree but creates sustainability that encompasses the entire way of life and economy of coastal communities. Participating in mangrove conservation is a true Biophilic connection, linking ourselves to the rhythm of nature and bringing ourselves back as a part of the ecosystem to help the earth's mechanisms repair themselves.

Currently, the mangrove reforestation area has been developed into a tourist attraction by adding nature trails through the forest.

The abundant mangrove forests—the cradle of diverse plant and animal life—are now protected in various areas across Thailand.

The energy of The Empress is all about giving birth, and the mangrove forest performs this role flawlessly. The intertwined roots underwater are like a womb or a safe cradle for young marine life, acting as the starting point of the food web that nourishes countless other lives.

Throughout our lives, we have been nurtured and protected—starting from the smallest unit of our family, the people around us, society, the environment, all the way up to the largest unit: the Earth, which has provided abundant natural resources and is the source of all life. It has given to us and taken care of us so well.

So, how well are we taking care of ourselves, and how are we giving back to the world? Share your thoughts with me!

Inspired by my journey, I created 'The Empress Sola Tarot'—a handcrafted floral collection made from natural, local materials like sola wood and mulberry paper. Crafted by skilled Thai artisans, we honor the natural properties of every element. Designed around the meaning of the Peony, this set represents protection, nurturing care, rich abundance, new life, and the warm essence of motherhood.
