Bushwillows
Bushwillows, known locally in Thailand as “Sa-Kae,” are hardy deciduous trees commonly found in dry forests and open woodlands, especially in central, northeastern, and some northern parts of the country. They are well adapted to arid climates.
One of the plant’s unique features is its papery seed cluster, which forms in layered, wing-like structures. When dried, these seed clusters become lightweight, firm, and naturally textured—making them ideal for craft applications.
In handmade floral work, the dried seed wings of the bushwillow are typically dyed and trimmed into petal shapes, then assembled into flower heads or used as accents in mixed arrangements. Their natural grain and subtle curves add a rustic, earthy character to each design. Often used for flower centers, bushwillow elements provide both texture and visual weight to balance more delicate materials like sola wood.
